### Present AI as a Clinical Aid

### Frame AI as a Second Reader

I explain it as a second reader. The software flags a pattern and puts a number next to it, and I still look at the image, the exam, and the person in front of me. When I say that out loud in three sentences before showing any output, patients start hearing that two sets of eyes looked at this.

For the numbers themselves, I hold off on percentages until I know how someone handles them. I draw 10 boxes and shade in the ones the tool says would look like this patient's scan. Then I ask them to tell me back, in their own words, what the shading means for their next step. If the teach-back comes out wrong, that is on my explanation, and I redraw it.

I disclose where the tool has limits without being asked. It was trained on populations that may not include them, it does not know their pain history, and a flag on a screen never sends anyone to a procedure by itself.

It does not know your history, your sleep, or what this year has been like, so I read it alongside everything you have told me.” Then stop and ask what they made of that. The explaining is not the intervention. The pause after it is.
