Gastroenterologist Performs Urgent Weekend Procedure

Matthew Fasullo, Interventional Gastroenterology
One instance that stands out was when I faced a patient suffering from acute cholangitis late on a Friday afternoon. Due to unforeseen staffing limitations, we were unable to coordinate the necessary support to perform an urgent ERCP that day. Recognizing the severity of the patient's condition and the potential consequences of delaying intervention, I chose to return the following morning--on a weekend I was not on call--to ensure the procedure was completed in a timely and safe manner. This not only highlights the importance of clinical expertise but also the deeper responsibility we carry to prioritize patients' well-being, even when it requires personal sacrifice. It was a reminder that truly excellent care often means stepping beyond what is expected to do what is right for the patient.
